Welcome to Mount Titano

Discover San Marino

According to tradition, the Republic of San Marino was founded on 3 September 301, when the stonemason Marinus withdrew to Mount Titano. It is the oldest republic still in existence: 61 km² between Romagna and Montefeltro, with just over 33,000 inhabitants.

Not to be missed

  • The Three Towers on Mount Titano: the Guaita, the oldest, the Cesta with the Museum of Ancient Arms, and the Montale.
  • Piazza della Libertà and the Palazzo Pubblico, seat of government, with the changing of the Guardia di Rocca in the summer months.
  • The Basilica del Santo, where the relics of Saint Marinus are kept.
  • The cable car linking Borgo Maggiore to the historic centre, with views all the way to the sea.
  • The historic centre and Mount Titano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

The nine Castelli

The country is divided into nine Castelli, much like municipalities: Acquaviva, Borgo Maggiore, Chiesanuova, Città di San Marino, Domagnano, Faetano, Fiorentino, Montegiardino and Serravalle.

Acquaviva, where we are

Acquaviva is the Castello in the north-west of the Republic, on the border with Italy and at the foot of Monte Cerreto, among woods and footpaths. Its name recalls the springs of the area. From here the historic centre is just a few minutes' drive away.

A small state with its own rules

  • The heads of state are two Captains Regent, elected every six months: they take office on 1 April and 1 October in a ceremony open to the public.
  • The currency is the euro: San Marino also mints its own coins, much loved by collectors.
  • San Marino is not part of the European Union, but you can enter freely from Italy, with no border checks.
  • The international dialling code is +378.

Events

  • 3 September: feast of Saint Marinus and of the founding of the Republic.
  • Late July: the Medieval Days, with parades, archers and costumed markets in the historic centre.
  • December: the Christmas of Wonders, with lights and markets in the streets of the old town.
